    If you have a laptop, then everything is simple: you just have to flip open the lid and press the power button. Peripherals are located in any convenient place from where the power cables and connections can be reached.

    Self-installation and computer connection

    1. Take the monitor, system unit and peripheral devices out of their packages. Place the monitor on the table, and the system unit on the floor or a special shelf in the computer desk for it.

  • Take out your keyboard and see which connector it has, PS / 2 or USB. PS / 2 is round and painted purple. Insert it into the keyboard port, which is also purple and located on the back of the system unit at the top right. In the case of a USB keyboard, plug it into any USB port.
  • Connect a mouse. Its connection is similar to that of a keyboard, only the PS / 2 connector is colored green, so the mouse port has the same color. The mouse and keyboard can be connected wirelessly. In this case, you only need to connect the adapter to the USB port of your computer.
  • Computer speakers or headphones are connected to the audio output on the back or front of the system unit. The speaker and headphone jacks are colored green, as well as the audio output of the system unit. Headphones can be with a microphone (headset). In this case, the pink microphone connector must be plugged into the same color microphone port.
  • The printer and any other peripherals are connected to the USB ports on the rear panel.
  • At this step, we connect the computer to the electrical network. The power cables of the system unit, monitor and peripherals are connected to a surge protector, which in turn is plugged into a 220V outlet. If there is no filter, you can plug it directly into the outlet, but this is not recommended. The filter removes network noise and makes the power supply of equipment more efficient.
  • After all the components of your system are brought together, turn on the red button on the surge protector. The voltage indicator on it will light up. On the back of the system unit, switch the power key to the "on" position.

    Press the power button on the front of the monitor and system unit. The computer turns on and starts loading the operating system.

    As you can see, there is nothing complicated about connecting a computer on your own.

    So, we have a system unit, a monitor, a keyboard with a mouse and various peripherals. Let's figure out what connects and where.

    As we already know, the motherboard is the main board of the computer. A processor, RAM and additional devices such as a video card, network or sound card are installed on it. Also, these devices may already be built into the motherboard (integrated into it).

    USB connectors have become so popular that modern motherboards are equipped with 2, 4, 6 and even 8 connectors. Often, manufacturers of computer cases place several USB connectors on the front panel of the computer for more convenient connection of flash drives, cameras, and other devices.

    Next, we will consider the most important connector for connecting a monitor. This connector is usually found on the video card, which is located inside the system unit (installed on the motherboard). In inexpensive office computers, the video card can be integrated into the motherboard and the monitor connector can be located elsewhere on the back of the case.

    There are two connectors for connecting a monitor - analog ( VGA or D-Sub ) and digital ( DVI , Digital Video Interface ).

    If you have an LCD monitor, that is, a liquid crystal monitor, then it makes sense to immediately connect the monitor to the DVI connector. The fact is that the video card generates digital signals that LCD monitors work with. CRT monitors (which have a cathode ray tube installed) use an analog signal. Therefore, video cards have a digital-to-analog converter (VGA connector). If you connect an LCD monitor to the analog D-Sub connector, the signal is double-converted, first from digital to analog and then back to digital in the monitor itself. As you know, any transformation occurs with the loss of information, that is, with the loss of quality. Most likely, you simply will not see the loss of picture quality on the monitor, but it is still more logical to use the connectors for their intended purpose.

    So, to connect the monitor to the system unit, use the appropriate cable (with D-Sub or DVI connectors). One end of the cable connects to the monitor, the other to the connector on the video card. To prevent accidental disconnection of the cable, connectors often have screws that can be used to secure the cable.

    There are also so-called universal ports. COM (Communication port - communication port) and LPT (Line Printer - line printer).

    The COM port, also called the serial port, is largely out of use. Previously, it was used to connect a modem or a computer mouse. Now you can find uninterruptible power supplies that are connected to a computer via a COM port. By doing this, you get the opportunity to control the UPS through a special program that comes with the source. The COM port is usually located on the motherboard and there can be several of them.

    The LPT port, which is also called the parallel port, is also practically not used anymore. Previously, it was used mainly for connecting printers. Currently, modern printers are connected to a computer via a USB port.

    Using a laptop as a monitor for a computer

    If the question arose of how to use a laptop as a monitor, then you should know that this cannot be done directly. Even if the laptop has a connector to which you can connect a cable from the computer's system unit, the image will not appear on the display. The installed system will be displayed on the laptop screen, there will be no connection with the PC.

    It is possible to display the image from the computer system unit on the laptop display only if you have previously configured the display of the desktop on the PC. To do this, you need a monitor, at worst, a modern TV with an HDMI, DVI or VGA connector (depending on which connection the PC monitor supported).

    For the connection to be established, the video card in the system unit must have at least two outputs. From one output, the cable goes to a PC monitor or TV, from the other to a laptop. The desktop is configured on the computer, the laptop will be the second display for now.

    1. Right click on the desktop. Open the Screen Resolution tool (Display Settings on Windows 10).
    2. The system should detect that there are two displays connected to the computer unit. You can duplicate images on them, extend the desktop to two screens, or select only one monitor.

    The laptop display in this case is the second device for displaying a picture. Set the value "Display the desktop only at 2" so that the image from the video card from the system unit of the computer is transmitted to the laptop screen.

    Such a connection is possible only if the laptop has a video input, and not just a video output. The presence of one connector for connection to the system unit does not mean that you can make a laptop monitor for a computer.

    You cannot use a laptop instead of a monitor, but you can make a remote connection and display data from the computer on the laptop screen. In this case, you do not need to connect the laptop to the system unit, the connection is established over the network. There are several proven options to display an image from a computer on a laptop display without connecting to the system unit.

    To configure, the computer must have a monitor, the laptop in this case will be the second display. First, let's see how the ZoneOS ZoneScreen program works. The application has two modes of operation - the server (the computer from which the image will be sent) and the client (the laptop, which will receive the signal).

    1. Run the program on your PC. Select the "Act as a server" mode and click "Next".
    2. Leave the port by default - 2730. It is better to set the resolution to the one supported by the laptop display.
    3. In the next window, select the image transfer options. The higher the transmission rate, the lower the latency. But as the speed increases, the load on the network and the computer increases. Set the number of uncompressed frames to 10 so that the load is not excessive. Once the connection is established, experiment with the settings to find the optimal settings.
    4. Click "Start" to start data transfer. If the connection has already been established, but you have changed the settings, click "Reloaded".

    Now you need to configure the client, that is, the laptop. Launch ZoneOS ZoneScreen on it and select the "Act as a client" mode. Leave port 2730 and enter the IP address of the computer to establish a LAN connection. To find out the IP address:

    1. Run Command Prompt on your PC. Type "ipconfig" and press Enter.
    2. Look at the IPv4 address.

    After entering the data of the computer in the client on the laptop, click "Next". A window will appear through which you will see the PC desktop on the laptop screen.

    If ZoneOS ZoneScreen does not work (there are compatibility issues with the latest Windows versions), try setting up remote control via TeamViewer or Radmin. The first program is distributed free of charge, the second one needs to buy a license, but there is a demo access for 30 days.

    You should download TeamViewer from the official website. To make the program work for free, check the "Personal / non-commercial use" item during installation.

    To establish a connection to a remote computer via TeamViewer, you need to know the ID and password. Naturally, TeamViewer must also be installed on the computer. The process of pairing devices is extremely simple:

    1. Find out the computer ID and password (just start TeamViewer on it, the identification data will be assigned automatically).

    In either case, you need to connect the hard drive to the laptop. This article is just about this, we will consider one of the simplest and most universal options.

    Question # 1: how to remove a hard drive from a computer (IDE and SATA)

    It is logical that before connecting the disk to another device, it must be removed from the PC system unit ( the fact is that depending on the connection interface of your disk (IDE or SATA), the boxes that will be required for connection will differ. More on this later in the article ... ).

    The process itself is quite easy and fast. Then take a close look at the connection interface (see Fig. 2). Now, most modern drives are connected via SATA (modern interface, provides high data transfer rate). If you have an old disk, it is quite possible that it will have an IDE interface.

    Computers usually use "large" 3.5 "drives (see Fig. 2.1), while laptops have smaller drives - 2.5" (1 "is 2.54 cm). The numbers 2.5 and 3.5 are used to denote form factors and it says about the width of the HDD case in inches.

    All modern 3.5 hard drives are 25mm high; this is called "half-height" compared to much older discs. Manufacturers use this height to accommodate one to five plates. In 2.5 hard drives, everything is different: the original height of 12.5 mm has been replaced by 9.5 mm, which includes up to three platters (there are also thinner discs now). 9.5mm height has actually become the standard for most laptops, however, some companies sometimes still produce 12.5mm hard drives based on three platters.

    Connecting the drive to the laptop

    Let's assume that we've figured out the interface ...

    For direct connection, you will need a special BOX (box, or in translation from English. "Box"). These boxes can be varied:

    • 3.5 IDE -> USB 2.0 - means that this box is for a 3.5-inch disk (and they are in a PC) with an IDE interface, for connecting to a USB 2.0 port (transfer speed (actual) no more than 20-35 Mb / s );
    • 3.5 IDE -> USB 3.0 - the same, only the exchange speed will be higher;
    • 3.5 SATA -> USB 2.0 (similarly, the difference is in the interface);
    • 3.5 SATA -> USB 3.0, etc.

    This box is a rectangular box, slightly larger than the size of the disc itself. This box usually opens from the back and the HDD is inserted directly into it (see Fig. 3).

    Actually, after that it is necessary to connect power (adapter) to this box and connect it via USB cable to a laptop (or to a TV, for example, see Fig. 4).

    If suddenly the disk is not visible on my computer ...

    In this case, 2 steps may be required.
